Complicated French Sentence 4 with Different Prepositions

In today’s French lesson – Complicated French Sentence 4, we build a complicated French sentence together. We start from level A1 – Beginner with a basic sentence, “J’ai demandé – I asked,” and we slowly add elements to end up with a complicated French sentence. All the way to a B2 level – Advanced!
Today, we focus on different prepositions in the sentence. Here are all the prepositions we are going to use today: à – de – chez – au – à l – aux – en – au – aux – à – dans.

This French lesson is divided into 2 different steps: 

Step 1: Build a complicated French sentence.
Step 2: Add different prepositions to the sentence

    Complicated French Sentence with Different Prepositions

    Step 1 - Build the sentence

    This sentence is built with the verb demander (to ask) conjugated in the passé composé.

    Basic sentence

    J’ai demandé
    I asked

    Subject pronoun + verb

    Add the preposition à

    J’ai demandé à + quelqu’un
    I asked + someone 

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition

    Add a name after the preposition à

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie.
    I asked Stéphanie.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name

    Add the preposition de

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de + infinitive verb
    I asked Stéphanie to + infinitive verb

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition

    Add an infinitive verb after the preposition de

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir.
    I asked Stéphanie to come.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb

    Add “avec moi” for more information

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me. 

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun

    Step 2: Add different prepositions to the sentence

    Add chez for businesses and people

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi chez le docteur.
    I asked Stephanie to come with me to the doctor.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + article + noun

    Add au before masculine nouns

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi au magasin.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to the store.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add à la before feminine nouns

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi à la librairie.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to the bookstore.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + article + noun

    Add aux before plural nouns

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi aux toilettes.
    I asked Stephanie to come with me to the bathroom. 

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add en before feminine countries

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi en Belgique.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to Belgium.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add au before masculine countries 

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi au Portugal.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to Portugal.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add aux before plural countries

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi aux États-Unis.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to the United States.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add à before cities

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi à Paris.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to Paris.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + noun

    Add dans for specific places

    J’ai demandé à Stéphanie de venir avec moi dans le jardin.
    I asked Stéphanie to come with me to the garden.

    Subject pronoun + verb + preposition + name + preposition + infinitive verb + preposition + emphatic pronoun + preposition + article + noun
