French Complicated Sentence 2 - A1 to B2

In today’s French lesson, French Complicated Sentence 2, we build a complicated French sentence together. We start from a beginner sentence, “Il a une voiture – He has a car,” and we slowly add elements to end up with an advanced French sentence. All the way to a B2 level!

    Complicated French Sentence 2

    Let’s start building a complicated French sentence together.

    Basic sentence

    Il a une voiture.
    He has a car.

    Subject + verb + article + noun

    Avoir can be changed into Avoir besoin de to express a need.
    Avoir besoin is always followed by the preposition de.

    Il a besoin d’une voiture.
    He needs a car.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + noun

    Add an adjective to do describe “une voiture”.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture.
    He needs a new car.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun

    Add more context with a second sentence.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun.

    Add a reference of time.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective.

    Add more information as to why he wants a new car.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun.

    => de in reference of quantities doesn’t change.

    Add more information as to why he needs more space.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour sa famille.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space for his family.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + noun.

    “Sa famille” can be changed to “Ses enfants”

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour ses enfants.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space for his children.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + noun.

    Add a reference of number to “ses enfants”.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour ses trois enfants.

    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space for his three children.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + adjective + noun.

    Add another reason why he needs more space. 

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour ses trois enfants et ses chiens.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space for his three children and his dogs.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + adjective + noun + conjunction + adjective + noun.

    Add a reference of number to “ses chiens”.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture. Il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour ses trois enfants et ses deux chiens.
    He needs a new car. He had an accident last week. He wants more space for his three children and his two dogs.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun. Subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + adjective + noun + conjunction + adjective + adjective + noun.

    Put together the 2 first sentences by adding “car” between the 2. 

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture car il a eu un accident la semaine dernière. Il veut plus de place pour ses trois enfants et ses deux chiens.
    He needs a new car because he had an accident last week. He wants more space for his three children and his two dogs.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun + conjunction + subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective. Pronoun + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + adjective + noun + conjunction + adjective + adjective + noun.

    Put together first sentence and the last one by adding “et” between the 2.

    Il a besoin d’une nouvelle voiture car il a eu un accident la semaine dernière et il veut plus de place pour ses trois enfants et ses deux chiens.
    He needs a new car because he had an accident last week, and he wants more space for his three children and his two dogs.

    Subject + verb + preposition + article + adjective + noun + conjunction + subject + verb + article + noun + article + noun + adjective + conjunction + Subject + verb + adverb + preposition + noun + preposition + adjective + adjective + noun + conjunction + adjective + adjective + noun.
