    Complicated French Sentence

Let’s start building a complicated French sentence together.

    Basic sentence

Chris boit. (boire – present tense)
    Chris drinks.

    Subject + verb

Chris can be changed into IL, a French subject pronoun.

    Il boit.
    He drinks.

    Subject pronoun + verb

Add a direct object to the basic sentence – un café

    Il boit un café.
    He is drinking coffee.

Subject pronoun + verb + article + noun

Add an adjective to describe “un café”

    Il boit un café noir.
    He is drinking black coffee.

Subject pronoun + verb + article + noun + adjective

    Add a reference of time

Le matin, il boit un café noir.
In the morning, he drinks black coffee.

    Adverb + subject pronoun + verb + article + noun + adjective

    Add another action

Le matin, il boit un café noir dans la cuisine. Il lit. (lire – present tense)
In the morning, he drinks black coffee in the kitchen. He reads.

    Adverb + subject pronoun + verb + article + noun + adjective + preposition + article + noun. Subject pronoun + verb

Add a direct object to the second basic sentence – le journal

Le matin, il boit un café noir dans la cuisine. Il lit le journal.
In the morning, he drinks black coffee in the kitchen. He reads the newspaper.

    Adverb + subject pronoun + verb + article + noun + adjective + preposition + article + noun. Subject pronoun + verb + article + noun

Now transform “Il lit” into the “gérondif” en lisant to show that he is doing both actions at the same time.

Le matin, il boit un café noir dans la cuisine en lisant le journal.
In the morning, he drinks black coffee in the kitchen while reading the newspaper.

    Adverb + subject pronoun + verb + article + noun + adjective + preposition + article + noun + gerund + article + noun

For the last step, turn the sentence into a negative sentence by adding “ne … pas” around the verb. Un changes to de in the negation.

Le matin, il ne boit pas de café noir dans la cuisine en lisant le journal.
In the morning, he doesn’t drink black coffee in the kitchen while reading the newspaper.

    Adverb + subject pronoun + ne + verb + pas + article + noun + adjective + preposition + article + noun + gerund + article + noun
