Espérer que - French subjunctive?

Does espérer que take the French subjunctive?

Yes and no!

Espérer que is followed by the French subjunctive only in negative sentences and in questions with inversion.
In affirmative sentences, the verb is conjugated in the indicative.

Example

Espérer que – To hope that

Affirmative: Tu espères qu’il grandit vite.
You hope he grows up fast.

Negation: Tu n’espères pas qu’il grandisse vite.
You don’t hope he grows up fast.

Question with inversion: Espères-tu qu’il grandisse vite ?
Do you hope he grows up fast?
