Bonjour à tous et bienvenue sur French chit-chat with Dylane. Aujourd’hui, on va parler d’IKEA, le géant de l’ameublement. On va parler de son fondateur, de son logo, de son histoire, de son catalogue et bien plus.
Un peu d’histoire
IKEA est présent dans 32 pays, avec presque 389 magasins. IKEA est bien sûr suédois. Je pense qu’on sait tous cela. Mais d’où vient le nom IKEA ? IKEA est un acronyme. Cela veut dire que chaque lettre correspond à quelque chose.
I pour le prénom du fondateur – Ingvar
K pour le nom de famille du fondateur – Kamprad
E pour le nom de la ferme où Ingvar a grandi – Elmtaryd
A pour le nom de son village natal – Agunnaryd
Ce qui est incroyable c’est que Ingvar Kamprad a commencé IKEA en 1943 quand il avait juste dix-sept ans. Dix-sept ans, c’est vraiment jeune ! Il a commencé IKEA dans une région peu peuplée de la Suède. Pour atteindre plus de clients, IKEA a produit un catalogue papier avec tous ses produits. Ce catalogue a été arrêté en 2020. Maintenant tout est en ligne. Je me souviens que je recevais toujours le catalogue dans ma boîte aux lettres.
Le logo
Le logo d’IKEA représente les couleurs de la Suède : bleu et jaune. Le logo n’a pas toujours été bleu et jaune. En 1951, il était rouge et rond. En 1954, il était marron. En 1967, il devient bleu et jaune. En 1981, il change en rouge et blanc avant de redevenir bleu et jaune en 1983. Le logo a changé légèrement en 2018. Si vous regardez sur YouTube, est-ce que vous voyez la différence ?
Les meubles en kit
IKEA est connu pour ses meubles en kit, ses meubles à monter soi-même, et ses emballages plats. Mais est-ce que vous savez qu’IKEA n’a pas eu l’idée des meubles en kit ? C’est quelque chose qui existait déjà avant. Par contre, c’est IKEA qui a vraiment développé l’idée et révolutionner la production, l’envoi et l’assemblage des meubles. Le premier meuble qui a été vendu en kit est la table LÖVET en 1956, donc 13 ans après le début d’IKEA.
Le nom des produits d’IKEA
Une des particularités d’IKEA, c’est le nom de ses produits. Tous les noms des produits sont suédois. C’est simplement le nom d’une ville, d’un lac, d’un oiseau, d’une plante, mais parfois c’est le nom d’une personne. Le système de bibliothèques BILLY par exemple, a été nommé après un des employés d’IKEA : Billy Likjedhal.
Le parcours du magasin
Quand on va chez IKEA, on doit suivre le parcours du magasin. C’est facile d’y passer des heures arec tout ce qu’il y a à voir. Pour nous faire rester plus longtemps, IKEA, comme beaucoup d’autres magasins, n’a pas de fenêtres. Il y a aussi un restaurant, une aire de jeux pour les enfants, et depuis peu, des points café dans le magasin. Si on a un petit creux, on peut manger un hot dog ou une glace. Si on a vraiment faim, on peut aller au restaurant pour un plat de boulettes suédoises.
Même si on n’a besoin de rien, on achète toujours quelque chose. Qui n’a jamais été chez IKEA pour un seul article et est ressorti avec un caddie complet ?

A bit of history
IKEA is present in 32 countries, with almost 389 stores. IKEA is, of course, Swedish. I think we all know that. But where does the name IKEA come from? IKEA is an acronym. This means that each letter corresponds to something.

What’s incredible is that Ingvar Kamprad started IKEA in 1943 when he was just seventeen years old. Seventeen years old, that’s really young! He started IKEA in a sparsely populated area of Sweden. To reach more customers, IKEA produced a paper catalog with all its products. This catalog was discontinued in 2020. Now everything is online. I remember always receiving the catalog in my mailbox.
The logo
IKEA’s logo represents the colors of Sweden: blue and yellow. The logo hasn’t always been blue and yellow. In 1951, it was red and round. In 1954, it was brown. In 1967, it became blue and yellow. In 1981, it changed to red and white before returning to blue and yellow in 1983. The logo changed slightly in 2018. If you look on YouTube, can you see the difference?
Flat-pack furniture
IKEA is known for its flat-pack furniture, self-assembled furniture, and flat packaging. But did you know that IKEA didn’t come up with the idea of flat-pack furniture? It was something that already existed before. However, IKEA really developed the idea and revolutionized the production, shipping, and assembly of furniture. The first piece of furniture sold in kit form was the LÖVET table in 1956, 13 years after the start of IKEA.
IKEA product names
One of IKEA’s peculiarities is the names of its products. All the names of the products are Swedish. It’s simply the name of a city, a lake, a bird, a plant, but sometimes it’s the name of a person. The BILLY bookcase system, for example, was named after one of IKEA’s employees: Billy Likjedhal.
The store journey
When you go to IKEA, you have to follow the store’s journey. It’s easy to spend hours with everything there is to see. To make us stay longer, IKEA, like many other stores, has no windows. There’s also a restaurant, a play area for children, and recently, coffee points in the store. If you’re a little hungry, you can have a hot dog or ice cream. If you’re really hungry, you can go to the restaurant for a plate of Swedish meatballs.
