Dans un épisode précédent, je vous ai parlé du croissant. Aujourd’hui, on va parler de la deuxième viennoiserie préférée des Français : le pain au chocolat.
On va parler du pain au chocolat mais on va surtout parler de son nom et de la guerre du “pain au chocolat” ou “chocolatine”.
Ce débat culturel divise les Français depuis des décennies. Comment nommer cette pâtisserie à base de pâte feuilletée et de chocolat ? Est-ce que c’est un pain au chocolat ou une chocolatine?
Avant de continuer, je dois dire tout de suite que je l’appelle un pain au chocolat donc c’est ce que je vais utiliser dans cette vidéo. Ça sera beaucoup plus simple.
Donc, le “pain au chocolat” ou “chocolatine” c’est quoi?
Un pain au chocolat, c’est une viennoiserie faite de pâte feuilletée, comme le croissant. Cette viennoiserie a été importée en France par les pâtissiers autrichiens, August Zang et Ernest Schwarzer. En 1837, ils ouvrent leur “Boulangerie Viennoise” au 92 rue de Richelieu à Paris. Ils vendent les premiers croissants et pains au chocolat fait à base de pâte à brioche. Ce pain au chocolat était appelé “Schokoladencroissant”.
Plus tard, les pâtissiers français modifieront la recette originale avec de la pâte feuilletée pour remplacer la pâte à brioche.
Le problème du pain au chocolat, ce n’est pas le changement de la recette mais le nom utilisé dans les différentes régions du pays.
En France, cette viennoiserie est généralement appelée “pain au chocolat” dans la plupart du pays, mais dans le sud-ouest, plus précisément dans les régions de Bordeaux et de Toulouse, on l’appelle ” chocolatine”. Cette différence continue d’animer des débats, surtout de nos jours avec les réseaux sociaux.
Les origines de ce débat linguistique ne sont pas claires. Certains disent que “la chocolatine” a des influences espagnoles ou basques. D’autres soutiennent que “le pain au chocolat” est le terme authentique, utilisé depuis des siècles dans la tradition française.
Comme je le disais, le débat continue aujourd’hui sur les réseaux sociaux.
Des hashtags #TeamPainauchocolat et #TeamChocolatine sont devenus populaires. Il y a aussi des vidéos humoristiques. Certaines personnes sont un peu plus engagées que d’autres on va dire.
Au final, les deux appellations sont correctes, c’est juste une différence de culture et de région.
Maintenant quelques chiffres.
D’après un sondage, 84% des Français disent consommer des pains au chocolat, contre 16% pour des chocolatines.
En France, un pain au chocolat coûte en moyenne entre 1 euro et 1 euro 50. C’est assez abordable.
Un pain au chocolat, c’est 414 calories pour juste 100 grammes. Il est composé de farine de blé, de beurre pâtissier et de chocolat. Sa forte teneur en beurre fait que ce n’est pas très bon pour la santé mais c’est tellement bon à manger. Comme on dit, il faut en manger avec modération.
Alors dites-moi, est-ce que vous avez déjà mangé un pain au chocolat ? Si oui, est-ce que vous en mangez souvent ? Et la question la plus importante : est-ce que vous dites un pain ou chocolat ou une chocolatine ?
Comme j’ai dit, j’utilise le mot pain au chocolat. Je n’en mange pas car je ne peux pas consommer de produits laitiers, donc pas de beurre pour moi.

We’ll discuss the chocolate croissant, but most importantly, we’ll talk about its name and the war of “pain au chocolat” or “chocolatine.” This cultural debate has divided the French for decades. How to name this pastry made of puff pastry and chocolate? Is it a chocolate croissant or a chocolatine?
Before we continue, I must say right away that I call it a chocolate croissant, so that’s what I’ll use in this video. It’ll be much simpler.
So, what is a “pain au chocolat” or “chocolatine”?
A chocolate croissant is a pastry made of puff pastry, similar to the croissant. This pastry was imported to France by Austrian pastry chefs, August Zang and Ernest Schwarzer. In 1837, they opened their “Boulangerie Viennoise” at 92 rue de Richelieu in Paris. They sold the first croissants and chocolate croissants made with brioche dough. This chocolate croissant was called “Schokoladencroissant.” Later, French pastry chefs modified the original recipe with puff pastry to replace the brioche dough.
The issue with the chocolate croissant isn’t the change in the recipe but the name used in different regions of the country.
In France, this pastry is generally called “pain au chocolat” in most of the country, but in the southwest, specifically in the regions of Bordeaux and Toulouse, it’s called “chocolatine.” This difference continues to fuel debates, especially nowadays with social media.
The origins of this linguistic debate are not clear. Some say that “chocolatine” has Spanish or Basque influences. Others argue that “pain au chocolat” is the authentic term, used for centuries in French tradition.
As I mentioned, the debate continues today on social media. Hashtags like #TeamPainauchocolat and #TeamChocolatine have become popular. There are also humorous videos. Some people are a bit more engaged than others, let’s say.
In the end, both terms are correct; it’s just a difference in culture and region.
Now, some numbers.
According to a survey, 84% of French people say they consume chocolate croissants, compared to 16% for chocolatines.
In France, a chocolate croissant costs on average between 1 euro and 1.50 euros. It’s quite affordable.
A chocolate croissant contains 414 calories per 100 grams. It’s made of wheat flour, pastry butter, and chocolate. Its high butter content means it’s not very healthy, but it’s so good to eat. As they say, you should eat it in moderation.

As I said, I use the term chocolate croissant. I don’t eat them because I can’t consume dairy products, so no butter for me.
