La semaine dernière, dimanche dernier, on a parlé d’Halloween. Donc naturellement, aujourd’hui on va parler des superstitions.
Une superstition, c’est quoi ? Selon Wikipédia, une superstition est une croyance irraisonnée fondée sur la crainte. Irraisonnée, ça veut dire sans raison.
Si on a des superstitions, on est superstitieux / superstitieuse. Il y a énormément de superstitions, des bonnes et des mauvaises. On va parler des plus communes. Vous pouvez me dire en commentaires si vous êtes superstitieux et quelles sont les superstitions là où vous vivez.
Quand une superstition est bonne, on dit que ça porte bonheur. Quand une superstition est mauvaise, on dit que ça porte malheur.
Voyons cinq superstitions qui portent malheur, puis cinq qui portent bonheur.
1. Les chats noirs
Il y a cette croyance que les chats noirs portent malheur. Ce qui est triste car les refuges sont remplis de chats noirs car moins de gens veulent les adopter. Ça n’arrange rien que les sorcières soient toujours accompagnées d’un chat noir.
2. Les parapluies
Ouvrir un parapluie à l’intérieur porte malheur. On ne peut ouvrir un parapluie qu’à l’extérieur.
3. Marcher sous une échelle
Je ne marche jamais sous une échelle, pas parce que je suis superstitieuse mais parce que je ne veux pas être blessée. J’ai travaillé pendant quelques années dans les chantiers de construction donc je ne marche pas sous les échelles ni les échafaudages. Non merci non.
4. Casser un miroir
Casser un miroir vous donnera 7 sept ans de malheur.
5. Le vendredi 13
On connaît tous le vendredi 13 je pense. C’est un jour qui porte malheur mais il faut jouer à la loterie. Celui-là est un peu bizarre.
Les superstitions qui portent bonheur.
1. Accrocher un fer à cheval au-dessus de la porte
Apparemment ça porte bonheur. Mes grands-parents ont un fer à cheval au- dessus de la porte de la cuisine. C’est la même chose que les échelles pour moi. Un fer à cheval c’est lourd et si ça vous tombe dessus, ça peut vraiment vous faire mal.
2. Un trèfle à quatre feuilles
Trouver un trèfle à quatre feuilles porte bonheur. Je n’en ai jamais trouvé, et pourtant j’ai beaucoup cherché !
3. Croiser les doigts
On croise les doigts pour dire qu’on espère que quelque chose se passe bien.
Je croise les doigts pour ton examen.
Ça change dans certains pays. En Suède par exemple, ils tiennent leurs pouces. Moi, je croise les doigts.
4. Toucher du bois
Pas besoin de toquer sur le bois, on a juste besoin de le toucher. Quand on parle de quelque chose de mal qui pourrait arriver par exemple, on touche du bois.
5. Casser du verre blanc
La dernière superstition du jour, c’est casser du verre blanc. Casser du verre blanc porte bonheur, c’est pour ça qu’on casse du verre dans certains mariages.
Alors, est-ce que je crois à certaines superstitions ?
La réponse est oui, mais pas toutes. Sur les dix superstitions qu’on vient de voir, il y en a deux que je fais un peu tous les jours. Je touche du bois, même quand je pense à quelque chose qui pourrait arriver. Et je croise les doigts.

Last week, last Sunday, we talked about Halloween. So naturally, today, we’re going to talk about superstitions.
What is a superstition? According to Wikipedia, a superstition is an irrational belief based on fear. Irrational means without reason.
If we have superstitions, we are superstitious. There are a lot of superstitions, good and bad. We will talk about the most common. You can tell me in comments if you are superstitious and what the superstitions are where you live.
When a superstition is good, it is said to bring good luck. When a superstition is bad, it is said to bring bad luck.
Let’s look at five superstitions that bring bad luck, then five that bring good luck.
1. Black Cats
There is this belief that black cats bring bad luck. Which is sad because shelters are full of black cats because fewer people want to adopt them. It doesn’t help that witches are always accompanied by a black cat.
2. Umbrellas
Opening an umbrella indoors is bad luck. You can only open an umbrella outside.
3. Walk under a ladder
I never step under a ladder, not because I’m superstitious but because I don’t want to get hurt. I worked for a few years on construction sites, so I don’t walk under ladders or scaffolding. No, thank you, no.
4. Break a mirror
Breaking a mirror will give you seven years of bad luck.
5. Friday the 13th
We all know Friday the 13th, I think. It’s a day that brings bad luck, but you have to play the lottery. This one is a little weird.
Superstitions that bring good luck.
1. Hang a horseshoe above the door
Apparently, it brings good luck. My grandparents have a horseshoe above the kitchen door. It’s the same as the ladders for me. A horseshoe is heavy, and if it falls on you, it can really hurt you.
2. A four-leaf clover
Finding a lucky four-leaf clover. I never found one, and yet I searched a lot!
3. Cross your fingers
We cross our fingers to say that we hope that something goes well.
I’m crossing my fingers for your review.
It changes in some countries. In Sweden, for example, they hold their thumbs. Me, I’m crossing my fingers.
4. Knock on wood
No need to knock on the wood. You need to touch it. When we talk about something bad that could happen, for example, we knock on wood.
5. Break white glass
The latest superstition of the day is breaking white glass. Breaking white glass brings good luck. That’s why we break glass at some weddings.
So, do I believe in some superstitions?
The answer is yes, but not all of them. Of the ten superstitions that we have just seen, there are two that I do a little every day. Knock on wood, even when I think of something that could happen. And I cross my fingers.
